Garmin Expands Outdoor Maps+ to Europe: Enhanced Features, Restrictions, and Implications

Garmin’s Outdoor Maps+ feature has recently undergone a significant expansion, now encompassing a wider array of countries, particularly in Europe. This expansion promises to deliver enhanced mapping capabilities, catering specifically to outdoor enthusiasts.

The most notable update pertains to the inclusion of European countries within the Garmin ecosystem. This expansion marks a substantial increase in coverage for Outdoor Maps+, extending its reach beyond the borders of the USA and Canada.

For European territories, Garmin has introduced several enhanced features, including the utilization of satellite imagery and high-definition shaded relief images. However, it’s worth noting that not all European countries enjoy access to these features, as evidenced by the absence of information for countries like Poland. Additionally, users can leverage high-quality topographic maps and the building view feature, which outlines the outer dimensions of structures.

However, it’s important to acknowledge certain restrictions that apply specifically to the USA. In this region, certain functionalities of Outdoor Maps+ are restricted, including the display of hunting areas, boat ramps, information about inland waters, and properties.

Garmin’s Outdoor Maps+ service is not offered free of charge, with users required to pay an annual fee of just under 60 euros. This offering primarily targets ambitious users and owners of specific Garmin devices, such as the GPSMAP 67, Montane 700, and Alpha 300. Moreover, compatibility extends to various Fenix 7 and Epix smartwatches.

Despite the expansion of map coverage, questions arise regarding the necessity of this expanded material. Garmin’s Fenix models already boast pre-installed maps that offer a high degree of detail, showcasing points of interest, smaller hiking trails, and bodies of water. Additionally, these devices boast comprehensive navigation functions.

Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether the Outdoor Maps+ features, previously confined to the USA and Canada, will eventually extend to countries like Germany. As of now, no official communication has addressed this possibility.
